New move against Queensland fruit fly

Capabilities

Plant & Food Research combines extensive knowledge in entomology and pathology with modern molecular techniques to develop novel methods of pest and disease control.

Our researchers develop new methods to detect and manage plant pests and diseases that reduce the need for traditional chemical controls. We adopt a whole systems approach to pest and disease management, maximising the effectiveness of beneficial insects and micro-organisms while minimising populations of damaging pests and pathogens.

Our links with researchers, growers, regulatory bodies and environment monitoring agencies worldwide provide us with vital resources and knowledge to monitor and model pest and disease spread to inform the development of fully integrated management systems.

Scientists in our Bioprotection Portfolio work with our genomics researchers to identify genes that confer natural resistance to pests and diseases in key crops and to develop molecular markers to facilitate our breeding programmes.
